The Green Bay Packers were hoping halfback Cedric Benson would return this season from a left foot injury, but that hope has been dashed.
Benson underwent season-ending foot surgery last Wednesday, coach Mike McCarthy reported last Thursday, to repair the Lisfranc injury in his foot. "Cedric Benson had surgery yesterday. That was the final conclusion. He will not be back with us this season," McCarthy said.
Benson originally sustained the injury and was placed on the new injured reserve/designated for return list, with a potential return date of December 9th. He will now be left on the IR for the rest of the season. Benson had a one-year contract with a veteran's minimum of $825,000, but has an injury salary split. Since he's been on the injured reserve he's been making a weekly prorated portion of $393,000.
James Starks and Alex Green have been the primary running backs this season, with Starks surpassing Green as the starter. Benson had been the workhorse of the running team, with 248 yards rushing, more than the rest of the team combined, when he was injured.
"Cedric I felt was playing very well each and every week as we moved forward. With that injury, we've been rotating Alex Green, James Starks, and now having John Kuhn back, I feel we have a good rotation. It's just really finding the things they all do well and play to that and have that in sync with the run-block unit. I thought the way we started last game and I thought Arizona was a good game. If we can just kind of find that rhythm, that would definitely benefit us," McCarthy said.
