Soccer Star Morgan Held Out Of Game

USA Women's Soccer player Alex Morgan missed Sunday's national team game at Candlestick Park
against New Zealand due to a minor left ankle injury.
U.S. Soccer says that Morgan sustained the injury last week in practice in San Antonio and is being held from the game as a precaution. Morgan was still listed as day-to-day for Wednesday's game, also against New Zealand at the time of the writing of this post.
This year Morgan has six goals and four assists in 11 games and is the team's third leading scorer. She won the National Women's Soccer League Championship with the Portland Thorns FC in August when she came on as a substitute in the final after missing three weeks with an unrelated left MCL sprain suffered in NWSL play.
The U.S. team recently won 4-0 against Australia and played New Zealand in San Francisco before playing them yesterday in Columbus, Ohio. The No. 1 ranked Americans finish their 2013 season against Brazil on November 10th.
Morgan is the author of "The Kicks" the first book in a new series on empowering young women and working as a team. She has modeled in the past and helped the U.S. women's soccer team to Olympic gold last summer. Morgan has been called the future of women's soccer.

Bobcats' Jefferson Questionable For Start

Bobcats center Al Jefferson suffered a severe ankle sprain and is hopeful he will get to play in the season opener today. He's currently listed as questionable against the Houston Rockets.
"He did some contact, some 5-on-5, but not everything," said coach Steve Clifford following practice Monday.
"The ankle felt good," Jefferson said. "My lungs were hurting more than anything, my wind." He added that "in my head" he's ready to play today against All-Star Dwight Howard, whom he has encountered multiple times since they both turned pro right out of high school in 2004.
Jefferson commented that he understands why Clifford and the medical staff are being cautious in deciding if he's ready to play today. His ankle may feel much better today than it did yesterday, and that will be determined before the game.
Jefferson was injured when he landed on Chris Bosh's ankle in a preseason game on October 11th. He played in most of the Bobcat's practice on Monday.
The Bobcats have a vested interest in Jefferson, not only because they paid him $15 million in free agency, but because he's going to be the anchor of their offense and a key player in their team mentality. Having Jefferson out any longer than he needs to be is going to be bad for the Bobcats, especially against the Rockets.

Peyton Manning Has TWO Ankle Sprains

When I blogged on Friday that Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning had an ankle injury, I had no
idea I'd find in my e-mail alerts Monday news that the star has not just one ankle sprain but two. Holy smokes.
Manning suffered both sprains, including a high ankle sprain, against Jacksonville on October 13th. He sustained the first injury in the first offensive play against the Jaguars. The four-time MVP received the second sprain when he was hit low by Jacksonville's Jason Babin.
The high ankle sprain was aggravated during last Sunday's loss against the Colts, when Manning was sacked by former teammate Robert Mathias. On the game tape Manning was seen grabbing his lower leg right above his right ankle.
Podiatrist to the stars, Dr. Robert Anderson of North Carolina, reviewed the scans of the injuries, and he confirmed the high ankle sprain. He did however say that the injury was not severe.
As we blogged on Friday, Manning missed practice on Wednesday and returned to practice Thursday. KCNC's Tom Helmer said Sunday morning on CBS Sport Network's The Other Pregame Show that Manning's "100 percent."
"It was a minor ankle injury. He's fine, he's 100 percent. When you talked to players on Thursday about how Manning's ankle responded (to treatment) when he returned to practice, they looked at you almost like you were nuts. It wasn't that big of a deal," Helmer said.
He took painkillers during Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins. In Sunday's game he went 30 for 44 for 354 yards with four touchdowns in the team's 45-21 come from behind victory. He also contributed three interceptions and one fumble.
Fortunately for Manning, the team has a bye this week.

Peruvian Soccer Star Guerrero Has Surgery

Peruvian soccer star Paolo Guerrero left an upbeat and positive message on his Facebook page Thursday morning after having surgery to repair a fracture in his left foot. Guerrero, sitting on a hospital bed surrounded by doctors and medical staff wearing scrubs and giving a thumbs up, looked confident and comfortable.
"Thank God, the operation went very well, with my family and friends to keep me company. Thanks to everyone for the messages and the good vibes at this time. Now it's back to hard work to get back to making goals," Guerrero wrote.
The surgery took place in San Paolo, Brazil and was postponed one day because of "emotional issues" on the part of Guerrero. The surgery was to repair a fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his left foot. El Comercio reports that the recovery time for this surgery is about three months.
The 29 year old was ruled out for the rest of the 2013 season after fracturing his fifth metatarsal during the Corinthians' 0-0 draw with Atletico Minerio on October 6th. Besides playing for the Peruvian national team, Guerrero also plays for the Brazilian club Corinthians. This injury prevented him from playing in Peru's final two World Cup qualifiers against Argentina in Buenos Aires and Bolivia in Lima.

Dodgers' Kemp has Foot Surgery

Los Angeles Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp underwent a left ankle operation Monday.
His agent, Dave Stewart, said Kemp will be ready for opening day, but the procedure will limit his off-season training.
The operation was performed by podiatrist for the stars Dr. Robert Anderson of North Carolina. Dr. Anderson removed several small spurs and a loose body, as well as doing a microfracture on the talus bone. Kemp will be in a splint for two weeks and a non-weight bearing boot for two weeks after that.
Kemp thanked fans on Twitter who had supported him throughout the season, tweeting, "Thank u 2 all my fans showing me mad love 2day. Surgery went well 2day and I'm ready 2 start this process of getting back!"
Kemp was sidelined all of the postseason because of issues with his ankle, which he originally sprained in a home plate collision in Washington on July 21st. Dodgers team physician Neal ElAttrache was concerned that if Kemp continued to play, he could break one of the major weight-bearing bones in his foot.
Kemp was limited to 73 games this season because of his ankle, missing 52 games over the last two months. He batted .270 with six home runs, 33 RBIs, and a .723 OPS in 2013.
This is Kemp's second consecutive winter in which he has had major surgery. Last year he had surgery on his left shoulder. Earlier this month he had a minor procedure to clean up that same shoulder. He finished his first season in his eight year, $160 million contract.
Kemp will be unable to put any weight on his foot for a month, says Stewart, and will be limited in the activities he can do in the month after that.
Stewart tried to put a positive spin on the surgery, saying Kemp would be able to do the upper-body work he couldn't do last winter, along with strengthening his core and hamstrings.
"We're anticipating he'll be ready for the season," Stewart said.

Indiana State Star Career Over

So was Shakir Bell dismissed from the Indiana State football team because of a foot injury or because of
something else?
A reporter from the Terre Haute Tribune-Star tweeted Tuesday thatIndiana's star running back was out for the rest of the season because of a foot injury. However, Bell posted on Twitter, "My dismissal from the team comes with no hard feelings & I realize this will have a negative outlook on me." This post was deleted, but not before Todd Golden, the Indiana State beat reporter for the newspaper tweeted it.
ISU coach Mike Sanford told the media the senior back, a former standout at Warren Central High School, is done for the year due to his injury. Sanford has declined to comment whether Bell was dismissed from the team or not. There has been no word from the Missouri Valley Conference or an official statement from Indiana State yet.
Bell was injured at the opener at Indiana and has been struggling all season. The team is currently 1-6, and Bell had carried 78 times for 420 yards and just one touchdown. He needed 122 more yards and four more touchdowns to set school career records. In 2011 Bell led the Football Championship Subdivision with 1,670 yards and was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award as FCS Player of the Year.

Peyton Manning Misses Practice; Will Play Sunday

Peyton Manning never misses practice. He misses practice so rarely that when he does, fans and the media take notice.
It was rumored that Manning was injured in Sunday's loss against the Indianapolis Colts, and the rumors proved true. Along with other Denver Bronco players Wes Welker, Eric Decker, and Orlando Franklin, Manning did not practice on Wednesday. The quarterback did however practice Thursday with his usual workload.
According to coach John Fox, Manning's ankle injury isn't "serious" and they kept him out of practice on Wednesday to "make sure it gets healed up properly."
Manning was repeatedly hit in his return to Indianapolis and his performance went down after former Colts teammate Robert Mathis creamed Manning for a safety. After the hits Manning underthrew several throws, but bounced back to make several difficult completions.
When asked when he was injured, Manning replied, "I know the government is shut down right now, but I still firmly believe in HIPPA." Oops. Hey Manning? Government's back up.
Thursday Fox almost had a top headline when he read the injury report after practice, "Peyton Manning did not participate." He realized his mistake immediately, and corrected his error, "No, I'm sorry... I was on the wrong day. I'll move over a column. Full [participant]."
Manning took the usual snaps with the starters and is scheduled to play Sunday against the Washington Redskins. Fox said after practice, "I thought he looked fine."

IndyCar Driver Franchitti Resting After Surgery

It was a scary sight to see last Sunday at the Grand Prix of Houston.
A spectacular crash at the IndyCar race injured 13 fans, two of whom had to be hospitalized and racer Dario Franchitti, whose car went airborne and struck a catchfence, sending debris and parts of the fence into the grandstand.
Franchitti's car went airborne when he tried to pass Takumo Sato on a fast portion of the course in Turn 5.
He tore into the fencing, which held, and his No. 10 Honda came to a rest on the temporary street circuit around Reliant Park with the front end missing and the tub portion of the chassis intact. E. J. Viso was also caught up in the accident.
Franchitti is recovering in a Houston hospital after having surgery to stabilize a broken ankle sustained in the crash. He also suffered a concussion and two spinal fractures in the crash at Reliant Park.
A statement released by Target Chip Ganassi Racing last Monday said the four-time IndyCar champion had surgery to temporarily stabilize his ankle. Spokesman Kelby Krauss added that Franchitti will undergo a second surgery on his ankle once he's transferred to Indianapolis, but that could be "within a few days."
The 40-year old Scotsman released a statement thanking fans "for all the well wishes. They mean a lot to me. I would also like to send my best wishes to all the fans involved in the accident and hope that everyone is alright."
Franchitti's brother, Marino Franchitti, a driver in the American Le Mans Series, has been with him at the hospital and tweeted, "Can't thank you all enough for all the wishes & support. @dariofranchitti is doing well considering, recovery starts here."
Actress Ashley Judd, who married Franchitti in 2001, but announced their separation in January, tweeted Sunday afternoon that she was "Amazed by the incredible outpouring of care & prayers" and that they're "Keeping our heads down here & doing what's in front of us to do."
IndyCar released a statement Monday afternoon about the last-lap crash: "Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by yesterday's accident. Thank you to the people of Houston for their support of the Grand Prix and their concern for Dario Franchitti, the fans, and the personnel. INDYCAR is thoroughly reviewing the incident. Reducing the risks that are associated with racing is one of our highest priorities and receives our constant and on-going focus."

University of Michigan's Mitchell Out Three To Five Months

The University of Michigan's women's basketball team will be without sophomore forward Kelsey Mitchell
for three to five months while she recovers from a foot injury, head coach Kim Barnes Arico announced on Tuesday.
Mitchell broke a bone in her foot during Michigan's preseason workouts and had surgery to repair the injury on Monday. This is sad news for Mitchell, who missed the 2012-13 season after tearing her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in summer workouts. She was able to play in Michigan's foreign tour in August, and averaged 9.3 points and 10.0 rebounds in U-M's three games.
"You feel for her because she worked so hard to get healthy after tearing her ACL last year," said Barnes Arico. "She was going to really help us on the rebounding end this season. I know she will work just as hard this time around to get back on the court."

Michigan starts their 2013-14 season with an exhibition contest against Wayne State on November 1st at Cristler Center. Their first regular season game is against Bowling Green in New Rochelle, NY on November 8th.

Trail Blazers Rookie McCollum Out After Surgery

We've unfortunately blogged about C. J. McCollum in the past, and we always hate having repeat blog posts
on athletes.
McCollum graced our blog pages in the winter when he broke the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot and had to have surgery on the injury. He was expected to be out 8-10 weeks, but he never returned to play with Lehigh.
McCollum was the 10th pick in the 2013 draft and was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers.
McCollum broke his foot in practice on Saturday, the same injury and the same foot, and will have surgery again to repair the fracture. The team has not set a timetable for his return as his surgery has not been scheduled yet.
As a senior the 6-foot-4 guard averaged 23.9 points in 12 games and at the Las Vegas Summer League he averaged 21 points (on 36.6% shooting) in five games for Portland.
McCollum faces stiff competition in the backcourt, which includes reigning Rookie of the Year Damian Lillard and veterans Wes Matthews and Mo Williams.

Canucks Without Burrows At Least Two Weeks

The Vancouver Canucks will be without forward Alex Burrows for at least two weeks while he recovers
from a foot injury.
Burrows sustained the injury blocking a shot while killing a two-man advantage in Vancouver's NHL season opener 4-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks last Thursday night.
"Alex Burrows is out and he's probably going to be out for a couple of weeks," head coach John Tortorella said Saturday before the game against the Edmonton Oilers.
"I know you're probably going to ask about 15 questions about shot blocking. Alex Burrows made the right play and if he doesn't make that play, he'll probably never kill a five-on-three again here. So don't turn it into that. It was the right play to be made. Injuries happen in a lot of different ways."
Burrows is the second Canucks players to be injured on a shot blocking play, which Tortorella insists on his players making. Jordan Schroeder suffered a hairline fracture in his midfoot during the preseason.
Tortorella is keeping mum about the exact nature of Burrows' injury.
"I just don't think we need to give out that information," he said at a press conference. "He's going to be out for a couple of weeks and that's the way we're going to leave it right now."
Burrows led the Canucks with 13 goals last season and had 11 assists in 47 games.

Lakers' Johnson Has Foot Injury

There has been a lot of glowing reviews coming out of the Los Angeles Lakers' training camp when it comes to Wesley Johnson.
Johnson is the former No. 4 pick in the 2010 NBA Draft and has previously played for the Minnesota Timberwolves and Phoenix Suns. Johnson signed a one-year minimum contract with the Lakers when his rookie contract ran out and has looked great so far in this preseason.
Those good vibes were squelched Sunday night during the Lakers loss to the Denver Nuggets when the new wing man felt a burning sensation in his left foot and left the game. He left during the first quarter with two points and three rebounds in eight minutes, shooting 1-for-5 from the field with two turnovers.
"There was a burning sensation in his foot," said Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni. "We're hoping it's not bad."
Johnson had an MRI scheduled on Monday to determine the cause of the injury.
There is no way yet to determine if playing Sunday was the cause of the injury or if the injury was going to occur anyway. Sunday's game was the second game in the first set of back-to-backs in the preseason, and many in the league are questioning this schedule.
Johnson was unimpressive in his Lakers' preseason debut against the Warriors. In 21 minutes off the bench, he scored just two points on 1-of-5 shooting, two turnovers, four fouls, and three rebounds.

Is Julio Jones Done For the Season?

Losing at home to the New York Jets was pretty embarrassing for the Atlanta Falcons, but the situation may
have become even more serious with the potential loss of wide receiver Julio Jones for the season with a foot injury.
A team source told CBS NFL Insider Jason La Canfora the injury is "a legitimate concern." Jones will get a second opinion today.
FOX Sports' Jay Glazer tweeted, "[The] initial determination by the Falcons is that Jones' season is over. They are hopeful [a] second opinion says otherwise, but [they're] not optimistic."
Yesterday at a press conference at Falcons headquarters, head coach Mike Smith called the rumors of Jones being out the rest of the season "premature at this time." He did concede that the results of the team examination earlier in the day "were not encouraging, but we will wait to see what the second opinion comes back as."
It is unclear when exactly Jones was injured, but according to Smith, it was likely before Jones' one-handed diving grab over the Jets' Antonio Cromartie with five minutes left in the game.
Jones has positioned himself as one of the NFL's brightest young talents. Against the Jets he had eight catches for 99 yards, with 41 catches for 580 yards and two touchdowns on the season. He leads the NFL in catches and is second to New Orleans' Jimmy Graham in receiving yards. Last year he had 79 receptions for 1,198 yards and ten touchdowns. As a rookie Jones hauled 54 catches, 959 yards, and eight touchdowns.
The Falcons were also without other big man Roddy White much of Monday night, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury and is still recovering from the high-ankle sprain he's had since the preseason. The Falcons are 1-4 this season and Smith does not want to blame their poor record on injuries.
"Injuries cannot be an excuse in the NFL," Smith said. "Every team has injuries, and we will not allow that to be an excuse. We've got to go out there and perform, and we haven't performed up to the abilities that we need to, to win football games and win them at the end thus far."

Golden Grizzlies Rookie Nick Daniels Out

The Oakland Golden Grizzlies have three of their four top scorers returning this season, including Travis
Bader, and the team is looking forward to their first season as a member of the Horizon League.
Head coach Greg Kampe will be without freshman guard Nick Daniels for at least eight weeks because of a broken foot.
Daniels, an all-state selection during his senior year at John Glenn High School in Westland, Mich., sustained the injury last Sunday in practice.
This now makes three players the Golden Grizzlies are down, including senior forward Raphael Carter, who will miss the entire season after he was diagnosed with a femoral acetabular impingement, and senior guard Ryan Bass, who left the program last week.
Oakland may have a decent season if leading scorer Bader (22.1 ppg), rebounder Corey Petros (8.2 rpg), and assist man Duke Mondy (5.1 apg) stay healthy. The team went 16-17 last season. The key for the team will be defense. Last season opponents shot 49.3% from the field overall and in Summit League play teams shot better than 50% than the Golden Grizzlies. However, because of their offensive skills, Oakland still won 10 league games.

Ice Skater Kim Yu-na Sidelined With Foot Injury

Reigning Olympic figure skating champion Kim Yu-na will miss the Grand Prix season after injuring her right foot.
South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported that Kim will be out up to six weeks because of an injured metatarsal, citing the Korea Skating Union. The 23 year old was having pain since mid-August and the news agency quoted an unnamed KSU official who said that if Kim continued to train her condition would worsen. She will continue to do light training.
Kim was to skate next at Skate Canada next month, then at Trophee Eric Bompard November 15-17 in Paris. She has withdrawn from both events, according to the International Skating Union.
For Kim, the timing of this injury is less than convenient. The Sochi Olympics are less than five months away, but layoffs have traditionally had little effect on the skating champion in the past.
Kim's gold at the Vancouver Games in 2010 was the highlight of a dominating two year span the sport has not seen. During that time frame she lost just one match and her performances at Vancouver set records that may never be topped. When she stepped away after the 2011 World Championships, there was speculation she might retire.
Kim returned for the World Championships last March and even with a two year break from major competitions, she looked as dazzling and technical as she had before. Her scores in the short and long programs are surpassed only by the records she set in Vancouver. Her 20 point victory was the largest at worlds since the current scoring system went in place in 2005.
Kim has said she will retire after the Sochi Olympics and is attempting to be the first woman since Katarina Witt to repeat as an Olympic champion.

Bucks' Delfino Hit With Setback

The Milwaukee Bucks thought they acquired Carlos Delfino this summer at a bargain, $3.2 million per year,
in their attempts to prove their "we're not tanking, but we are reshaping the roster and we'll not be all that good" strategy.
However, the Bucks will be without Delfino for most of training camp because of a setback to his surgically repaired foot.
Delfino fractured his right foot playing for Houston in Game 5 of the Rockets' first-round playoff series against Oklahoma City last April. He was signed to a two-year deal with a team option for a third season.
The 31 year old was still in a walking boot at the team's annual media day Monday.
"I had a fracture five months ago and I had surgery," Delfino said. "I had a little setback the last couple of days. We don't have a timeframe. They are taking pictures and we're going to know more in the next couple of days. I can't wait to get on the court."
Delfino spent three years with the Bucks and signed as a free agent and played a big role with Houston last season. He noticed the injury in his foot with a month left in the season and played through the pain. Delfino played off the bench until he completely fractured the foot while dunking over Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant in Game 5.
"I don't really like to talk about this injury because I was playing injured for a month," Delfino said. "Most of the injury was probably my fault because I tried to play five or six weeks with a fractured bone in my foot... I tried to dunk and it just cracked."
The Bucks will play veteran Caron Butler at small forward and young players Khris Middleton and Giannis Antetokounmpo will get more playing time.
"Hopefully he's on the mend and hopefully we can get him back as soon as possibly," Bucks coach Larry Drew said. "I've always been a big Carlos Delfino fan, and I was ecstatic when we signed him. I'm hoping he can recover as fast as he can so he can join the team."

No Return Date For Pelicans' Miller

Darius Miller, fresh off his rookie season with the New Orleans Pelicans, and set to be the future of the team,
suffered a big setback last month with a foot injury.
Miller had a stress fracture in his foot that needed to be surgically repaired and was to be out eight to 12 weeks. With that timeline, he was due to be back by early November.
This news alone was bad news for Miller, a forward with the team, as they loaded up this offseason. Miller played limited minutes off the bench at three last season and this season Tyreke Evans will likely start at three with Al-Farouq Aminu and Anthony Morrow behind him. It will be tough for Miller to have some minutes at four behind Ryan Anderson with the rotation already set and him not having been at camp.
It's unknown how the injury occurred, but it likely happened during training camp. He started to feel pain in his foot while working out and asked the team's medical staff to take a look at it.
Miller's situation got worse Monday at the team's press conference. The former University of Kentucky standout still needs crutches to get around and at this point has no timetable for his return.
Miller is still wearing a cast, which should be removed in the next week.
"I'm waiting to get the cast off so I can get it stronger, and get the range of motion back in my ankle," Miller said. "I haven't really talked about a set date (to return) or anything. They said they don't want to rush it, and I don't blame them."
Miller will not be able to play in the NBA pre-season game against the Washington Wizards on October 19th in Rupp Arena.

College Runner Samantha Bluske Out With Foot Injury

Runners, especially at the elite level, always know the possibility of injuries is right around the bend.
When hearing of fellow runners and their injuries, they hope, "Oh, please not me, please not me." Each college team is affected by injuries, but the injury Iowa State was dealt last week is a large blow.
Samantha Bluske, fifth year senior and team captain, injured her foot in practice last week and has been in a walking boot since.
"I had been having some small foot pain for a few weeks. It was nothing bad and I was still running fine," Bluske said. "But on a long run, I stepped in a hole and tweaked it. I couldn't really run after that."
Bluske transferred from Illinois State in 2011 and redshirted that season. She earned second team Academic All-Big 12 honors last season, and finished ninth at the Big 12 Championships, as well as being one of the top Cyclones to finish at the NCAA Championships last fall.
Since this is her fifth and final season, this injury is beyond a nuisance.
"I've worked so hard for this season, and it's really a huge bummer that this had to happen," Bluske said. "But it isn't the end of the world. I still have this spring. I'm just trying to make the best of it."
Bluske will know by the end of this week what exactly her injury is, but for now, the team is treating it as a stress fracture, which can typically sideline a runner for four to eight weeks.
"We really don't know what is wrong yet," said head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough. "We're expecting the worst right now, but hoping for the best."
Instead of just sitting on the sidelines and watching her teammates run, Bluske has been doing physical therapy and running on underwater treadmills to rebuild the strength in her foot.
The team will now have to find a replacement for Bluske. Last week the team took fifth at the Griak Invitational, one of the largest cross country meets in the country.
"It's really too bad, but we still have to move forward," Grove-McDonough said. "I certainly hope she makes it back because she's a tremendous asset. But from this point, we have to act like Sam won't be competing for us this fall."
Whether it's on the sidelines or running with her team again, Bluske hopes to support her fellow runners as much as she can.
"I am still going to do my part for this team, whatever that may be," she said. "Part of my duties as a captain are to be there and support the girls. Whether I'm running or watching from the sidelines, that's what I'm going to do."

Patriots Wilfork Done For Season

Atlanta Falcons fans booed Vince Wilfork during the first quarter on Sunday night, thinking he went down
with an injury, acting to slow their offense.
Bet they felt pretty awful after they found out why Wilfork went down.
The 31 year old New England Patriots' defensive tackle was carted from the sidelines to the locker room during his teams' win and Monday coach Bill Belichick confirmed that the injury is a torn Achilles tendon. Wilfork is likely done for the season. News of the injury was first reported by The Boston Globe.
Wilfork's wife, Bianca, tweeted a picture of Wilfork Tuesday afternoon that showed her husband in a hospital chair, giving a thumbs up with his right foot in a cast.
"Thank God for a successful surgery," she tweeted.
The team didn't have to share that Wilfork was headed to the season-ending injured reserve list- Wilfork did that himself.
"One thing I know is I signed up to play football [and] I don't regret anything that has happened and there is no need to feel sorry about it. I've been blessed to only have one surgery prior to today and that was in high school.... I have so much confidence in our team and know that they will do great and I will be right besides them, maybe not in uniform but in other ways," the nose tackle posted to his Twitter account.
Wilfork is a five-time Pro-Bowler and for the past ten seasons, he has been a centerpiece on New England's defensive line. He has rarely missed playing time since being drafted by the Patriots in 2004, playing all 16 games in 2010, '11, and '12. He has missed just six games in his entire career.
"He's irreplaceable," said quarterback Tom Brady. "We'll have to find a way collectively as a team to fill the void. It's an unfortunate injury. Injuries are a part of the game, but the season-ending ones are always tough to swallow."
Undrafted rookie Joe Vellano filled in for Wilfork on Sunday night, recording three tackles plus one sack of Matt Ryan. The team may also look outside the organization for a tackle, especially Richard Seymour, who played for the team from 2001-08. Seymour played eight games for the Oakland Raiders last season, his fourth with the team.
