Soccer Star Pepe Has Ankle Surgery

Real Madrid central defensive player Pepe will be out a month following right ankle surgery yesterday.
The team's statement on their website says, "Pepe, after feeling discomfort in his right ankle and having a medical examination, had a consultation with Dr. Van Dijk in Porto this morning. An ankle arthroscopy has been performed on the player."
Pepe had his operation in the Portuguese city of Porto. The club's goal is to have him healthy for their vital Champions League clash with Manchester United in February. He injured his ankle against Espanyol and most likely further injured it playing the full 90 minutes against Malaga.
The surgery was an attempt to put an end to problems that have plagued the soccer star for more than a month. Pepe will miss five games while he recovers. The center would have missed this weekend's game against Real Sociedad anyway because of a suspension, but the timing is not good. His defensive partner Sergio Ramos is also suspended, while Raul Albiol is also injured, along with left backs Marcelo and Fabio Coentrao. These absences mean coach Jose Mourinho will give a first start this season to veteran Ricardo Carvalho, partnered with youngster Rafael Varane, and B-team defender Nacho at left back.
Sunday's home game against Real Sociedad will be the first time Real Madrid has appeared in front of their fans since ending 2012 with a 2-3 defeat against Malaga.
