Soccer Player Stephen Gleeson Looking Forward To Time Off

British soccer player Stephen Gleeson is looking forward to a rest.
And by rest, we don't mean a nap. Gleeson spent more than a quarter of the latest soccer season on the sidelines with a broken foot and rushed back from his injury to help his team mount a late challenge for the playoffs. Gleeson originally broke his left foot during training
Gleeson had some spectacular moments in the run-in, but he's looking forward to putting his feet up.
"Every footballer goes through probably 18 months of bad injuries, and I've had six long spells out. I'm still struggling with my foot, but it's the first time I'm looking forward to having a long break.
"Hopefully (Head of Sports Science and Fitness) Damien Doyle can let me lay off the foot for six weeks. I want to come back fully fit. At the moment, I'm just looking forward to the rest," said Gleeson.
Gleeson broke his foot in December, and the injury coincided with a knee problem by Luke Chadwick. The two were ruled out for several months right before Christmas. Without them, the Dons won just one match in League 1, which began their slide down the table and out of playoff contention.
Gleeson is unsure how the Dons would have played if he and Chadwick had been healthy throughout the season.
"We can't tell what would've happened if me and Luke (Chadwick) didn't get injured when we did. I feel we have a squad good enough to compete, but at the time we didn't deal with injuries and suspensions well enough.
"I know the manager has taken the blame, but everyone has to look at this season and ask why it went wrong. I sit here now disappointed because I know we should be getting out of this league.
"The club is at a crossroads and we need to get out of the league sooner or later. We have a great stadium, the pitch is brilliant, one of the best in the league, our fans are brilliant- it needs to happen soon. In the next few years the club will move on and I've no doubt that it'll kick on out from there," Gleeson said.

In soccer foot injury news:

  • Olympique Marseilles striker Andre-Pierre Gignac will be out for six weeks after breaking his left foot in their 1-0 Ligue 1 loss at Troyes. He was taken to the hospital for a scan, which revealed the extent of the injury. The team said on their website "Andre-Pierre Gignanc suffered a broken metatarsus. He will be sidelined for six weeks according to the medical staff." Gignac has been an injury-prone player, have played two poor years in Marseilles, but played a key role in his team's six league wins to start the season, when he scored five goals. Marseilles is the first team to win their first six games since Monaco in their 1960-61 season. They went on to be the crowned champions. Marseilles took only one point from their last three league games and is second on 19 points from nine games, behind leaders Paris St. Germain. Gignac tweeted: "I am a fighter! I'll come back even stronger!"
  • Northampton Town Cobblers midfield Luke Guttridge, 30, will be out for three months after breaking a bone in his foot as well. He suffered the injury while attempting a shot on goal during a 2-1 defeat to Gillingham at Sixfields. It was a purely accidental collision where the Gillingham defender was attempting to block the ball as Guttridge volleyed a bouncing ball and the Town man kicked his foot. Boss Andy Boothroyd told BBC Radio Northampton that Guttridge would have the broken metatarsal pinned.
  • Aberdeen defender Ryan Jack is expected to be out until the end of January with a metatarsal injury in his foot. The 20 year old sustained the injury in Scotland Under 21's 2-0 defeat to the USA Under 21s in Marbella, while captaining for the first time in his career. The midfielder will require surgery after X-rays revealed he had fractured a metatarsal for the third time in his career. Jack was out for 11 months from the same injury in 2008 and is determined to make an impact on his return for the Scottish Premier League run-in. "I know this is serious as I've done it before. I'm gutted but I will come back fitter and stronger," Jack said. Jack played a key role in Aberdeen's nine game winning streak, which helped them to third in the league. Boss Craig Brown is disappointed to lose Jack, saying, "It is a pity for Ryan and for ourselves. He is an important player for us as he can perform in a number of positions. It is a blow but the important thing is he has the surgery and gets back to full fitness so he will be available after Christmas."
  • Brazil and Real Madrid full back Marcelo had also fractured a bone in his right foot, his fifth metatarsal bone. Marcelo sustained the injury while on international duty while training with Brazil in the Polish city of Wroclaw. He returned to Madrid and the decision was made for him to have surgery in Amsterdam. The team estimated he would be out for three months. Marcelo hopes to be fully recovered in time for the 2013 Confederations Cup that Brazil will host. He has been Brazil's starter at left back.
  • Stephen Gleeson of the Milton Keyes Dons is out with a suspected broken foot. The midfielder played the last 20 minutes of the 1-0 defeat to Stevenage with the injury and was sent for scans after the game. Manager Karl Robinson was devastated at losing yet another player- his fourth this season. "Gleeson could be out for three months. It looks like he's got a fracture to his fifth metatarsal. I'm sick at the moment. It's hard. He has played for 20 minutes with what looks like quite a severe broken foot. And he was the last one out there clapping every fan." Gleeson is one of the Dons' best players, and with some tough games coming up, he will be missed.
