Jets' Santonio Holmes To Start Season On Sideline

The New York Jets placed wide receiver Santonio Holmes on the active-physically unable to perform list
Tuesday. Holmes is still recuperating from the foot injury that ended his season last year after just four games.
Holmes, 29, will be able to come off the PUP list after he has been cleared by the medical team and is considered a long shot to be active to start for the beginning of training camp. There is no timetable for his return to the game.
Holmes injured his left foot during the Jets' 34-0 loss to San Francisco in Week 4 and has since had two surgeries to repair the injury, including one in February to remove the screw in his foot. He has not been able to put full weight on his foot while working out on the gravity-assisted treadmill, which is not a good sign for the wide receiver.
Holmes told reporters recently he was not sure he would be healthy enough to practice when the Jets started training camp last Friday in Cortland, NY. He is hopeful he will be healthy enough to play when the season begins.
"I don't have a target date," Holmes said at the uSTADIUM's Flags For Foundation flag football tournament on Roosevelt Island. "I don't want to do anything to jeopardize myself being ready for the season."
Recovery has been a difficult process for Holmes, who had to relearn how to walk after suffering the dreaded Lisfranc injury. Rehabilitation from this injury is lengthy. Since Holmes has not even started to run yet, it's tough to determine how far along in his recuperation he is.
"It's just getting back into the swing of walking and running without any pain from having scar tissue build up around the injury," Holmes said.

Santonio Holmes Needs More Surgery

New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes will need more surgery on his left foot in February to remove the plates installed in October to repair his Lisfranc injury.
Doctors told Holmes he won't be able to start training again until April, and he is noncommittal on being ready for training camp in August. "I've got another surgery in February. That's all I know," said Holmes, who visited the Jets' facility for the first time since being placed on the injured reserve.
Walking in a large black walking boot, Holmes made his first public remarks since his season ended. Holmes has been home in Florida recovering with his family, reading more books, and spending more time with his children. Last Friday was group picture day with the team.
"I really miss being here," Holmes said.
Holmes had played 20 years without having an injury this serious. "I knew the minute I didn't get off the ground that my season was over," he said. Holmes had surgery two weeks later and was placed on the IR.

Santonio Holmes Has Lisfranc Injury

Last week Santonio Holmes was carted off the field during the Jet's Week 4 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Holmes was injured in a non-contact play, his fourth and final catch of the game, when he fumbled the football and his foot got caught in the turf.
Many feared that it was a knee injury; a similar event happened to Darrelle Revis the week previous (his was a torn ACL in his left knee). The Jets announced after the game that it was a foot injury. The X-rays came back negative, and the team sent Holmes' MRI to several places while Rex Ryan says they are "trying to figure out exactly what it is."
"I'm not sure how many weeks he'll be out, the real extent of the injury. We just know the X-rays were negative. That's good news. Obviously it looks doubtful for this week," said Ryan.
Doctors ruled out an Achilles tendon injury, and recent reports state the Holmes has a Lisfranc injury and will likely miss the rest of the season. Lisfranc injuries often involve torn ligaments in the midfoot area and sometimes necessitate surgery. Recovery can take several months.
Oakland Raiders wide receiver Jacoby Ford is out with a similar injury and Houston quarterback Matt Schaub and Raiders running back Darren McFadden are back from missing time last season with Lisfranc injuries.
Holmes is the Jets' best and most consistent player on the offensive side of the ball, and if he misses significant time, their hopes for a winning season are not likely.
