Red Sox's Ortiz Has Foot Problems, Again

David Ortiz

When we said last week that we were hoping Carlos Beltran's bone bruise on his foot wasn't an inauspicious beginning to the baseball season, we were being serious.
Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz's foot problems are becoming a tale as old as time. Ortiz is likely to begin the season on the disabled list after being diagnosed with inflammation in his heels. He has not played in a week, and said he wasn't surprised to about the inflammation because of how his feet have felt recently, especially his left foot.
"I knew there was something that was not normal. I was getting pain four or five hours after I was finished with my workout. I knew something wasn't right," Ortiz said.
Ortiz spoke with the medical staff and an MRI was taken on Saturday. He was relieved the diagnosis wasn't worse.
"It's not anything crazy, thank God," Ortiz said. "But it's going to take a couple weeks to get fixed."
The Red Sox slugger has started a course of anti-inflammatory medication and is receiving daily treatment. "We started doing a whole bunch of different things. I'm not just going to be doing baseball activities I guess for about a week. It's not a good feeling. I've been working really hard this offseason just to make sure, you know, I'm good to go for the season... The one thing that we really are working on is when I'm back, I'm back. It's not just coming back for a couple of weeks and go back to the same thing."
Ortiz's foot troubles go back to last July when he sustained a small tear in his Achilles tendon. He's not surprised he's still having troubles eight months later.
"We're humans. We're humans. Nobody wants to be injured. Me, I was going 120% this offseason working with this injury. The good news is that it had nothing that had to do with my Achilles, like it used to be. That made me happy, at least, knowing my Achilles is doing fine.
"It's a process that when you are going at it, you pretty much use everything. It's not like you can get picky with the things you want to do. Not being formally doing things for like six months, it's like starting all over. It happens."
With everyone's favorite DH and first baseman on the DL for the foreseeable future, who will replace him?
"It's safe to say we don't have another David Ortiz to occupy that slot. Where the best matchups are and how do we balance Mike Napoli playing everyday. Everything projects where he would be fine but we all have to consider that," said manager John Farrell.
Ortiz says his newest injury is related to his Achilles tendon and all the time he had off. "Yeah, I was compensating. I was compensating, that's one thing. The other thing is the time without running and doing all that activity. But I was compensating for the Achilles. That's why I was getting a little bit of inflammation on the other side."
Ortiz doesn't expect to miss much time, but he believes the Red Sox can be great without him. "We have a good team now. We have. We have good players. I've been talking to a lot of them and the one thing that I keep telling them is just try to do what you do at your best. Don't try to do more than that. You're going to bump into some tough times, just learn how to deal with it and everything's going to be taken care of."

Major League Baseball Foot Injury Update

Atlanta Braves
Andrelton Simmons, SS
Simmons was not in Wednesday's lineup against the Brewers after he suffered an ankle sprain in Tuesday's pickoff attempt.
Baltimore Orioles
Troy Patton, RP
Patton is working his way back, having thrown a successful bullpen session on Monday.
Boston Red Sox
David Ortiz, DH
Echoing sentiments expressed by the slugger himself, manager Bobby Valentine admitted on Sunday that Ortiz is almost certainly done for the season. Valentine told the Boston Globe, "I would assume that unless David decides he's totally pain free (he won't play). As of our last conversation, he feels much better, and the shot seems to have really worked. But I think it takes a couple of weeks for that to totally set in." Ortiz returned to wearing a protective boot on his right foot after aggravating his Achilles tendon on August 24th.
Cleveland Indians
Roberto Hernandez, SP
The Plain Dealer reports that Hernandez had the walking boot removed from his sprained right ankle on Tuesday. The team is still unsure if he will be able to play this season.
Cleveland Indians
Rafael Perez, RP
The Indians expect Perez to throw a simulated game sometime next week. Perez has been out with an ankle injury.
Houston Astros
Marwin Gonzalez, SS
Gonzalez has a torn ligament in his ankle after tripping over first base in a pinch hit appearance. He is wearing a walking boot and there is no timetable for his return. Gonzalez has not been placed on the 15 day DL however.
Milwaukee Brewers
Corey Hart, 1B
Hart remained out of the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Braves because of a left foot injury. The Brewers hope Hart will return to pinch-hit in today's game. If Hart is going to return, he is going to have to play through the pain. "I think I can tolerate it. It's not going to go away. But trying to find the right tape, the right insert. Something to modify. Obviously I'm not going to be running very quick right now," said Hart.
New York Yankees
Derek Jeter, SS
Jeter grounded out at the top of the eighth inning in Boston on Wednesday and appeared to injure his left ankle running out the play. Jeter was limping badly following the play and was removed before the next half inning began. "It's not an issue," said Jeter, who has a bone bruise in his left ankle. "You can play or you don't. I'm going to play."
New York Yankees
Andy Pettitte, SP
Pettitte has gotten the clearance to start running again and is expected to start throwing a simulated game.
Philadelphia Phillies
Kevin Frandsen, 3B
Frandsen was out for the seventh straight game Wednesday against the Marlins because of a stress fracture in his left fibula. He did appear as a pinch hitter on Tuesday, but manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. said his role won't get much better than that. "He's not going to be our regular third baseman. I don't think he can do it physically. I don't want to have a guy playing on a broken ankle. Even though it is just a stress fracture, we're not going to put him out there and have him try to do something he can't do. So he might play one day, then get another day off. He might come in for an emergency situation or he might come in to pinch-hit. It depends on how he feels," said Amaro.
Pittsburgh Pirates
Gustavo Nunez, SS
There is no new update on Nunez's condition or status.
Texas Rangers
Mike Olt, 1B
Olt is dealing with plantar fasciitis in his right foot and will undergo a preliminary MRI. Olt is day to day with the Rangers.
Toronto Blue Jays
J. A. Happ, SP
Happ has suffered a broken foot and will require surgery to repair it. It is the end of his season. Manager John Farrell told reporters that Happ will need screws inserted in the foot and will require four months to recover, but will be ready to go for next season.

Major League Baseball Foot Injury Update

Baltimore Orioles
Troy Patton, RP
Patton began rehab activity on Tuesday, running in the pool, and was expected to throw for the first time yesterday. He is expected to be back in September, just in time for playoffs.
Boston Red Sox
David Ortiz, DH
Ortiz is back on the 15-day DL because of his Achilles tendon injury. Ortiz is set to receive PRP, platelet rich plasma, injections and undergo a week of treatment for his injury. The team remains hopeful he will return for the remainder of 2012. "If everyone felt, if he had that desire and the medical staff thought that it was the best thing for his career, that would definitely be done," manager Bobby Valentine said about keeping Ortiz on the DL. "But with the meeting of the minds, with David wanting to get back in the uniform and the medical staff believing that there's a chance he could, we figured that's the best way to go." Ryan Kalish was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to take his roster spot.
Chicago White Sox
Orlando Hudson, 2B
Hudson began his rehab assignment Monday night with Charlotte. He led off against Syracuse and went 1 for 4 with a strikeout in the game. He is recuperating from a bruised left toe.
Cleveland Indians
Roberto Hernandez, SP
Hernandez left Monday's game with a sprained ankle, but manager Manny Acta doesn't expect the pitcher to miss his next start, tomorrow, against the Rangers.
Colorado Rockies
Dexter Fowler, CF
Fowler has missed seven games because of an ankle injury. He has made three pinch hit appearances during that time, going 0 for 3.
Houston Astros
Francisco Cordero, RP
No update on Cordero's status.
Houston Astros
Jed Lowrie, SS
Lowrie said Tuesday that he expects to play again this season and hopes to return in mid-September. "I"m encouraged with how everything is progressing. I'll just continue with every step, jump through every hoop and make sure it's good to go and get back out there as soon as possible," said Lowrie.
New York Yankees
Andy Pettitte, SP
Pettite threw off flat surface Tuesday as he continues to recover from a fractured ankle. The team expects Pettitte to throw a bullpen session today as he expects to return some time in early September.
Philadelphia Phillies
Carlos Ruiz, C
Ruiz is making progress, running drills on Tuesday, taking batting practice, and catching a bullpen session. "Everything is progressing. I think it was four to six weeks from the time, so we think he'll be back somewhere in the time frame," said assistant GM Scott Proefrock.
Philadelphia Phillies
Nate Schierholtz, RF
No update on Schierholtz's status.
Pittsburgh Pirates
Gustavo Nunez, SS
Nunez has yet to play this season after having surgery on his foot in the off-season. He began a rehab assignment with Gulf Coast League several weeks ago, but there is no current update.
Tampa Bay Rays
Jeff Niemann, SP
Niemann is expected to start Saturday's game against the Blue Jays.

David Ortiz Injures Achilles Tendon

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz limped after the game on Monday against the Chicago White Sox, a result of stepping on second base incorrectly during the 8th inning.
His Achilles tendon is injured, but fortunately not ruptured. He will likely be out for a week resting his sore tendon and will not have to be placed on the disabled list. Ortiz was walking around the clubhouse in a walking boot and said that he was in "A lot of pain. Lots of pain. Today was worse than yesterday when it comes down to soreness. But it's not torn, which is good."
Last year Ortiz had right heel bursitis, but said of this recent injury, "This is different. It's the same area, but a bit more soreness initially." When he didn't feel his tendon pop, Ortiz was relieved. "It was the first thing that I thought," he said.
It's been a rollercoaster season for the Red Sox, with people coming on and off the disabled list almost every week. Ortiz injured his foot the same day Crawford returned to the lineup and less than a week after Jacoby Ellsbury came back. "It's crazy. One comes out, another one goes in. It's like a roller coaster. But we'll see. Hopefully it doesn't take too long," said Ortiz.
